Project Brief - Hand and Eye

Context: As an illustrator and visual communicator, image-making is the most significant and powerful tool in your repertoire. We need you to familiarise yourselves with the conventions of building striking visuals and to decide for yourselves if you are to follow or challenge them. But we would also like to introduce you to the idea of a location and observation as a starting point. We can add a new dimension to our images by incorporating images from observation and not just our imagination.

Brief: You are required to generate wordless, site-specific, psycho-geographical and sequential imagery. During this project you should aim to take a physical (not digital) approach to observation and image generation, including perspective, figure illustration, colour and texture as narrative devices in order to improve and deepen your knowledge of colour theory and rendering. This project will help you to find confidence in using the college facilities to generate work, and teach you how to work within specific requirements, considering client and audience needs.

Project Aim: This studio focuses on the importance of making concepts physical through the process of drawing, mark-making and the application of media. Students will learn methods of exploring and developing their visual language through projects, workshops and group activities. Students will pro-actively learn the skills needed to process ideas through materials.

Outcomes:
1. Documentation of response to the workshops and activities set to you
2. A collection of developmental sketching (in a scanned sketchbook, presented on your workflow blog)
3. A set of 50 thumbnail sketches as part of your preparatory work
4. A considered and striking final A3 Landscape image, hand-rendered using analogue techniques including
drawing, painting and print-making, scanned at 300dpi, in response to your site visits.
