Create & Destroy 3 Explanation & Analysis

I decided I wanted to continue experimenting with different variations of sculpture making as it continues to be a medium I really enjoy working with. For this piece I created a clay bird-human hybrid, resembling that of a plague doctors mask. So far in this project I have tried to make all of my create experimentation link in some way to destruction part of the topic without yet destroying the piece through a different method. Originally, as can be seen in one of the images of me manipulating the clay, I drew out a more circular style of what I wanted the final piece to look like. Despite the fact that my model turned out quite different from my initial sketch I'm still pleased with the outcome as it has a more distinct styling in the finished version.

It is estimated the black plague ended in the year 1353, at this time plague doctors suffered a metaphorical death as they gradually faded out of cultural relevance into the historical background. I wanted to illustrate this story through the destruction of this piece, as the creation served to show a stylised depiction of a plague-doctor-esque mask made out of clay, the destruction of it through smashing it once into many pieces symbolises the fragility of the plague doctors role in society at the time.
